You're right it is a misuse but by and large, hunters contribute to the welfare of wildlife through payment of fees to maintain habitat and general respect for using what they harvest and maintaining control of populations so you don't have a deer living in your backyard I'm a lifelong hunter (proof in my gallery:-0) and fisherman and can't imagine life without it. Ever try either s&s? It's probably mostly a guy thing but there is an adrenaline rush when you get a perfect shot or have a 10 pound walleye hit your line like a hammer. Oh brother! I grew up in the Oklahoma panhandle (very rural) and almost everyone I knew hunted or had a male family member that was a hunter. I don't believe in hunting for sport, but everyone I know that is a hunter hunts for food (either for themself or to donate to food banks, etc). The idea of hunting really doesn't bother me, I guess because it is something I grew up with. However, I do love animals and think that they are gorgeous (especially geese). This blog just makes me roll my eyes though because I think it's silly that you broke up with him because of his hunting habits... I just don't understand some people. lol.

I understand the need/benefits to culling, and killing for food, but the idea of enjoying it and getting an adrenalin rush over taking somthings life is quite wrong. Killing for sport or enjoyment is not for me.

In response to Garth, I am not against killing . It is that they just use the braest meat and throw the whole bird away. They don't even leave them for the foxes.
I just feel that it is disrespectful and greedy and selfish and appaulling.

If hub did that he be out the door. He has made it a point to teach our son that we kill for food; not for the thrill of the kill. I am glad he's responsible and teaching our son safety and ethics involved in hunting.

We even had to buy a new freezer this year and have already had several big dinners here.

I will give this suggestion to all hunters here:

One of our usual hanging out with friends by the pool nights that usually nothing to write home about turned out great. As the wives sat around bitching about the upcoming hunting season the conversation evetually turned to our freezers. We all needed to clean them out but none of us could cook that much meat in a short time.

We contacted a few shelters, one thing led to another and over the past 3 years we now have a Saturday each August dedicated to "Hunters for the Hungry." Now we have 8 drop off locations and are able to fill the freezers at several area shelters.

I am not looking for a pat on the back especially since I am far from perfect. I did want to spread the word about this very simple idea that allows hunters to be very helpful.

I think that's a great idea Ragin'! I applaude you for it and have also supported similiar efforts where I live. (We also have a program "out here" called "hides for habitat" - donating animal hides that could be sold to pay for conservation efforts.)
My real point was...hunting in itself is selfish in 2008! No one really needs to "hunt to feed their family" anymore...your full freezers should have proved that point. Wild game is great but if you end up, at the end of a season, with WAY more food than you can use makes me wonder if you really needed to hunt at all? Maybe your guy did....I don't blame him...I do! Guys are pre-disposed to hunt and provide for their families - it makes us kind of what we are (or ever where) The difference today is most hunters never blatantly KILL just to keep up with their primal roots...and that's why I thought S&S was wrong kicking her guy to the curb based on circumstantial evidence...has she ever not eaten part of sandwich (or ANY meal) she ordered at a restaurant for whatever reason? That seems kind of wasteful too...
