Wow that HAD to be intense! I had to recollect my thoughts after just reading it. I just can't fathom what goes through the minds of some people or how anyone could think that behavior such as that could be justified in any way, form, or fashion. I can't say for sure what I would have done in your situation, I think you handled it well.
