Uniformed or Not.

I served in South Korea for three years, from 2006 to 2009. I was stationed at Division Headquarters in Uijeongbu, South Korea. I was so excited about being stationed in South Korea during Basic Combat Training I shouted when I received my orders. I heard war stories from my great uncle who served there. I am also a M*A*S*H TV show fan and watched many reruns growing up. I get to my unit and meet the First Sergeant (1SG) and the company commande. The captain was busy doing paperwork and justed greeted me and my fellow new soldier. I was so excited about going off post and seeing what Korea had to offer. The 1SG briefed us what to expect and so on. He finished the brief with this order, "you have to stay on post for 30 days before you can leave this post. This insures us that new arrivals receive all their safe briefings about Korea." I am sure the disappointment of having to wait a little longer was written on my face.

Finally the 30 days was over and I told my battle buddy that I was going off post and explore Uijeongbu. I hop into the shower with much excitement to see new things, taste new things, and speak new things in a foreign land I once just dreamed about. After finishing my shower, I dry off and wrap the towel around my waist and walk out the bathroom and to my surprise the 1SG is the room on my side. He was waiting for me to talk to be to see if I contacted my family to let them know I was fine. He didn't want a red cross message from a worried family member. After asking me about where I grew up and other small talk topics that one would ask to get to know someone better. The conversation was coming to an and he was getting ready to go to a couple of other barracks for more personal briefings with other new soldiers. It was at this moment that my roommate that behind me and to my left had reached over and snatched my towel off my waist leaving naked in front of the 1SG. Now I just place my hands on my hips like Superman. I can hear my roommate laughing very hard and the 1SG is actually blushing. I am grinning from ear to ear not embarrassed to be naked in front of other men. (Or women) The 1SG says has he leaving is "when I see my private's privates it is time for me to go." My roommate and I laughed so hard I was hunched over my bed with tears in my eyes for laughing so hard. Once I gained composure I walked to my wall locker grabbed my civilian clothes and got dressed to explore Korea.

I was telling a man about my time in Iraq. About the time I was blown away by an IED with my sergeant also. The excitement was intense and so was our return fire until we were told not engage but let the Iraqi Army do all the fighting.
