Officer Topher Spradlin had just started his new job at the most dangerous prison in the state. He was nervous about working there, knowing the history of violence and danger that surrounded the facility. As he was being shown around on his first day, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease as the other officers warned him about the do's and don'ts of working at this prison.
'Never be by yourself, always have other officers with you,' one of the officers, advised him nervously. Topher nodded, taking in the information and mentally preparing himself for the challenges ahead.
Later that day, Topher followed a group of officers as they made their rounds on the main floor cell block. They stopped at one of the cells, and the officers explained that they were going to open the gate and make the prisoners line up for a head count.
'Be on your guard,' one of the officers warned Topher, as they unlocked the cell door. Topher stood by, watching as the prisoners walked out and began to line up. He couldn't help but notice two black inmates standing together in line. They were both tall, about 6'1, and had muscular, intimidating builds. Topher couldn't keep his eyes off of them, wondering who they were and what they were in for.
One of the officers snapped his fingers in front of Topher's face, snapping him out of his thoughts. 'Pay attention, Spradlin,' he barked, shaking his head in disapproval.
Topher quickly apologized and tried to focus on his duties. Throughout the day, he couldn't help but keep an eye on the two black inmates, who seemed to stick together and were always surrounded by an aura of power and confidence.
Later on, as the prisoners were let out into the prison yard for their daily workout, Topher was assigned to keep a close eye on them. He stood with the other officers, scanning the yard for any signs of trouble. As he watched, he noticed the two black inmates, working out together. They were lifting weights and doing push-ups with ease, their muscles rippling with every movement.
Topher turned to one of the other officers and asked, 'Who are those two guys?' The officer shrugged. 'I don't know much about them, but I do know their names. Trevor and Ossie.'
Topher couldn't take his eyes off of them, impressed by their strength and determination. Suddenly, he saw them snatch a barbell away from another inmate, causing a commotion. Topher quickly made his way over to them, determined to prevent any trouble.
'I saw what you guys did,' Topher said firmly, trying to assert his authority. Trevor and Ossie turned to face him, their expressions defiant. 'So?' they replied in unison.
Topher took a deep breath, trying to remain calm. 'I don't want any trouble from you guys,' he said, looking directly at Trevor and Ossie. 'You can't bully the other inmates.'
Trevor and Ossie just laughed, clearly not intimidated by Topher's words. 'If we do, what the fuck are you gonna do about it?' Ossie challenged, stepping closer to Topher.
Topher felt a surge of fear and adrenaline, knowing that these two inmates could easily overpower him. But he also couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more to them, something that he couldn't quite put his finger on.
'I've been watching you two brothers,' Topher said, using the term loosely. 'You seem to do everything together. But that doesn't give you the right to bully others.'
Trevor and Ossie exchanged a look, then burst out laughing. 'We're not brothers,' Trevor said, still chuckling. 'Just because we're both black doesn't mean we all look alike.'
Topher felt a wave of embarrassment wash over him, realizing his mistake. 'I'm sorry,' he apologized sincerely. 'I shouldn't have assumed. I just... I've been intrigued by you two. You seem... different from the other inmates.'
the two inmates turned towards him and gave him a cold, hard look. Topher's face turned red with embarrassment as he realized his mistake. It was clear to him now that the two inmates, Trevor and Ossie, were not related in any way.
The other officer at the guard station had witnessed the whole thing and shook his head in disapproval. 'That was a dumb thing to say, Topher,' he scolded. 'And to make matters worse, you walked over there by yourself. I told you to always have at least one other officer with you.'
Topher hung his head in shame as he apologized for his mistake. The other officer sighed and shook his head. 'Do you have a death wish, Topher? These are not ordinary inmates, they are dangerous and unpredictable. You need to be more careful.'
Feeling embarrassed and humiliated, Topher vowed to do better. But his nervousness only grew as the day went on. He couldn't stop thinking about the two intimidating inmates and the potential danger they posed.
Later that day, the officers received a new order from the warden. There were new cell blocks being built on the north side of the prison and some of the inmates were going to be moved there. And to Topher's horror, Trevor and Ossie were among them.
The other officer noticed Topher's discomfort and decided to give him a lesson. 'Since you can't seem to keep your eyes off of those two, you're going to be watching them closely,' he said sternly. 'And you better make sure nothing goes wrong, or it'll be on your head.'
Topher nodded, feeling the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. He knew he had to prove himself and show that he was capable of handling even the most dangerous inmates.
