I live in the Nashville area and am wanting to experiment with being in communal showers and not getting a boner. I've tried a few times in the Downtown YMCA but both times I got noticeably hard and got a few awkward glances. I've heard that other Ys near Nashville also have communal showers, is that true? Hey man. I used to have this problem when I was younger, too. I found that I got over it through gradual acclimation. I started using open showers in off hours and would use a far corner showerhead and have the towel nearby. It gradually became more routine for me to be naked in increasingly exposed situations for increasingly longer durations, which enabled me to gradually move the towel further from safety and to use the shower during increasingly crowded times. It still feels exhilarating to be naked where other guys can see my dick, but I outgrew that response.

Three ideas:
1) try not to think about being nude with other new men. I know, easier said than done.
2) Never masturbate about shower situations - you are programming your brain to connect showering with sexual excitement.
3) If possible, masturbate before you get into the showers, even if it is a couple of hours before. Certainly masturbate the morning that you know you are going to the YMCA.

Fortunately, shower boners were not considered a bad thing when I was 18 years old in high school.
