I’ve searched this site and not seen anywhere where anyone talking about gay themed movies and tv shows

So I’d like to talk about gay themed movies and tv shows.. not porn.. as there’s a few themed movies with a lot of sex .. those are fine..

I’ve got and seen a lot of each and just curious if there’s some you all have seen that I may not have seen

Or some you want to see but wonder where to watch them and/or if any good to watch

I recently did a mini binge-watch of gay themed movies on Amazon Prime Video (US) and recommend the following:

Joyland (2022) - Pakistani movie with a superb ensemble ,great cinematography and will leave you feeling bittersweet afterwards (let's be honest, which gay movie doesn't .) The main plot point revolves around the youngest married son of a close knit family taking a job as a backup dancer for a trans woman in a Bollywood-style burlesque show, eventually becoming infatuated with her.

And Then We Danced (2020) - Georgian (country not the state) film with great acting from a young cast, interesting choreography, beautiful lighting, and somewhat of an uplifting ending. This one's about a male competitive dancer from a struggling background / family who's eyeing a lucrative spot in the National Georgian Ensemble and suddenly falls head over heels with a new incoming dancer at the academy who's also competing for the same - think Black Swan but without the psychological horror aspect, a tiny bit gayer and a sprinkling of puppy love.

Pain and Glory (2019) - From Pedro Almodovar, so if you've seen some of his past films you have a good idea of what to expect - colorful, poetic, nuanced, warm and of course gay. The plot follows the life (jumps between past and present, as expected from Almodovar) of an aging Spanish film director and how his past decisions and circumstances have shaped his future (movie is somewhat autobiographical). There's excellent acting from Antonio Banderas & Penelope Cruz and this wouldn't be an Almodovar film if there wasn't some hot, young, Spanish eye-candy character who gets justifiably naked for us ;).

For comedy, there's "Brothers" that ran on Showtime from 1984 to 1989. It was among the first TV series to regularly feature gay characters and the issues they faced. One of the bars near where I lived used to have TV night in the 80s with "Dynasty" followed by "Brothers. It's available on YouTube (search Brothers 1984), not sure if it's been released on DVD.

Another American movie is Bros. Heavily Gay
This is one I really disagree with.

Bros is why we are not going to a get a big budget queer romcom for years if not decades. The acting, characterization, and plotline are all incredibly flat and vacuous which is why the queer community didn't turn out to support it.

A good queer movie really depends on what you like.

If you are looking for something that deals with coming of age: 'The Way He Looks', 'Un Frere (A Brother), Close, and Monster are good choices.

If you want something more adult themed, 'Cuatro Lunas (Four Moons)' is one I will always recommend. Follows queer dynamics across four generation of men living in Mexico, each of which are in differing yet similar stages in their journey.

'Label Me' is also a very good choice that initially sets out to explore the relationship between refugees and the citizens of the host countries they live in as well as the whirlwind nature of internalized homophobia. However, the movie's greatest (and unwitting) success is its exploration on how power dynamics can drastically shape the nature of relationships. Does it so well, it borders on disturbing.

If you are looking to explore how the queer community responded to the AiDS crisis, 'The Normal Heart' and 'BPM' do this expertly.

And then if you prefer something funny, 'Pride' from 2014 follows a group of queer activists who decide to help raise money some miners who were on strike and had to deal with the weird reality where you are trying to help someone who may or may not be embarrassed by you associating with them. Also, 'Badhaai Do' is an equally hilarious film that follows a policeman and a gym teacher who end up in a lavender marriage and are now forced to deal with the antics of their families and friends who are insistent on meddling in their lives (this one does become fairly serious towards the end)

And then you have the classics:
Maurice
Brokeback Mountain
Moonlight
My Private Idaho

And these are the movies that keep the sex level to a moderate/minimal level
