I’m going through the middle of a health scare right now. I hooked up with a guy on July 30 and swallowed his load. We didn’t fuck at all. Yesterday he told me he tested positive for hiv. He doesn’t know when he contracted it.

Im obviously going to get tested soon. I don’t know how long I should wait. Should I be worried? I know hiv transmission through oral is low but not zero risk. Does anyone here know anyone personally who contracted through oral ?

You shouldn't wait. You should go & get on a plan now. Why give a potential infection the chance to grow & replicate & spread inside you? Go to your Dr. or Planned Parenthood. Figure out your steps with a trained professional. They'll likely put you on a course of pills just in case. Even if your risk is low, take the lead. Waiting is not your friend.

I don't know anyone personally but I do know that it CAN happen... and yes... ingesting the semen of someone who is positive can lead to contracting HIV.

Agree 100 percent.

Your encounter was 4 weeks ago, but the standard for a positive test is 3 months (or at least it used to be), so you were almost certainly exposed. The risk of infection from swallowing is small, your stomach acid should have taken care of it. Any ulcers or small cuts or tears in your mouth or throat would increase the risk.

But the risk of not treating an infection, should you have one, increases every day you delay.

"Oral sex carries little to no risk for getting or transmitting HIV. Theoretically, transmission of HIV is possible if an HIV-positive man ejaculates in his partner’s mouth during oral sex. However, the risk is still very low, and much lower than with anal or vaginal sex. Factors that may increase the risk of transmitting HIV through oral sex are oral ulcers, bleeding gums, genital sores, and the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), which may or may not be visible."

Preventing Sexual Transmission of HIV

But, for sure, get tested anyway.

Yes I know multiple men who became HIV+ from giving oral sex, they were into swallowing, or the one said how he had dental work done and thought there was no way he could become poz from sucking and swallowing but that is what happened.

Giving Oral sex is low risk for HIV, as in it is not as risky as unprotected anal sex, BB anal sex as a bottom, or sharing IVs but it is not zero risk and people do become HIV+ from it. Get tested for HIV and all other STDs.

You will not get HIV from oral sex. You would literally need cum to travel into an open blood gushing wound.

This is not correct.

For one thing, "a gushing wound" is self-cleaning - with all that blood rushing "out", it would be pretty hard for any microbe to find a way "in".

The reality is that lots of people have gum disease - especially drug users who are, let's face it, somewhat common in the gay community. And, raw, bleeding gums, are a perfect entry point for diseases of all sorts.

Hzs3fg's postings are well worth reading because you are providing and quoting current, relevant, and reliable source. I would still get tested, but the information in these posts are from a definitive source. I'd kinda trust that.

I always thought the risk to oral was high ..not due to actually swallowing but due the cracks in the gums after brushing.

Either way, contact your local public health agency Test now & test later. In addition I am sure they can speak to a host of other tools.

Again the odds from a bareback non prep receptive bottom are 1 in 200 with a less than 2% chance at any exposure from a high positive count carrier. The odds from sharing needles is 1 in 100.

The odds from oral would be in the one per ten thousands rare if at all. Per CDC there is “little to no risk of getting HIV from Oral sex.” https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/pdf/risk/cdc-hiv-oral-sex-fact-sheet.pdf

Is it humanly possible? Yes. Is it likely? No. You are free to spin a narrative of fear, but there’s enough of that in the world.

That very document clearly states, "Though the risk of HIV transmission through oral sex is low, several factors may increase that risk, including sores in the mouth or vagina or on the penis, bleeding gums, oral contact with menstrual blood, and the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)."

Which is pretty much what I said.
