I use the Harbor Freight brake pump (above). Just don't let water get in it - it'll be instantly ruined. If you do pump with water, just use the separator cup.
I've made a couple tubes, mainly as an experiment. I used clear plastic tubing that was flexible but was about 1/4" thick. It worked well, and has a natural curve, so it could be handy for some people. I made a cap from 1/2" polycarb and learned a few things about trying to turn it on a drill press. Anyway, the finished product works well, and the deformation is hardly noticeable. The only advice would be to use a silicone cushion at the base.
