Info on a 90s UK porn movie and accompanying documentary

I know this will be a bit of a niche long shot but in the late 90's there was a documentary shown in the UK on Channel 4 about the making of a UK gay porn film. I've only seen the documentary at the time of broadcast and don't remember much. Only that during the castings they wanted amateur guys who hadn't done porn before (except I think for one who the director mentioned cost a lot more to hire) and also that one of the amateur models was described as a 'posh' rugby player.

Over the years I've tried to find a copy of either the documentary or the film itself online to view but I haven't had much luck myself. I wondered if anyone had more info on if they are available to view anywhere.


The documentary was called 'A Star is Porn' - imdb link - and the film was called 'Butt Buddies' - 'iafd link'


For me searches have only really come up with old forum posts where people wish it was re-run and an old webpage about the playlist of a film festival that mentions the documentary - British Gay TV - as well as the film title mentioned in bio/interviews with the director "Amory Peart" but that's about it.

Ahh okay ... that could explain why I can't find any clips from the movie. I'd just assumed 'butt buddies' was too generic a term to search for.

I think I remember the “straight” guy mentioning that he had other TV roles in the past (including what I imagine was a bit part in Eastenders) and that he was hoping that doing gay porn would show his versatility…
He did look pretty smoking in those backless leather chaps though!
I’m also pretty sure that I spotted the posh rugby player in an American porn film a few years later.

I've been doing a bit more googling and I just found this eBay listing for a picture postcard advertising the documentary - Pardon our interruption...

I also saw another film by the same director - Lick Daddy, Suck Bear! DVD - released afterwards that mentions 'Butt Buddies' on the cover, which hopefully means it may have been released at some point?

Totally interested to watch this. When I saw the headline I assumed it was for the channel 4 documentary Hardcore, which I think is available via a blog in a resolution too low to bother with (360p).

I remembered which film I saw the posh rugby guy in, and thus have a name for you.
It seems that he followed his porn dreams to America a few years after this, where he changed his name to Robert Harvey, got some really unflattering blond highlights and starred in several mid-budget porn films where he seems to have been 100% bottom.
The film I saw him in was the rather good actually Sex Psycho, but a quick google search will reveal the rest of his work.
Sadly he doesn’t speak much in any of the scenes I watched, which is a shame as I recall liking his posh accent!

I was checking out some of his films that show up on the usual sites and he's credited as the storyteller in 'Bedtime Stories' where he speaks for a bit, I only had time to check out the first couple of mins (there's a copy on boyfriendtv)

I had a better chance to look at the film and I thought I'd cut out his scenes as 'the storyteller' in Bedtime Stories and post them here (there's nothing worse than coming across a post with some info and the links are dead). Maybe seeing and hearing him will jog some memories if anyone's seen 'A star is porn' or 'Butt Buddies' posted anywhere with a different name.

Well a little bit of a New Years miracle for those that have been following this thread.

I received a private message not long into 2025 where a kind person has just passed on a link to a streaming site with the documentary 'A Star is Porn" .... so many thanks to them for finding this and helping us all to see it again.

I've only had a very quick skim through (I need to recover from new years first, lol) but it seems to all be there.

After all the years I've spent looking I honestly thought this was a long shot that wouldn't be resolved but now has given me renewed hope that the film itself is out there somewhere as well.

Well the actual documentary is there to watch .... but I suppose it's a good idea to have some bits uploaded here in case it's taken down in the future.

I've concentrated on screen shots of the three main guys who are focused on in the documentary but anyone else free to add more if you like.

I love that Robert was so disgusted with the condition of the location that he washed the dishes while he was waiting for his scene to start!


It mentions in the end titles that Robert was financing and starring in his own Daddy movie - if anyone knows if that happened please let us know.
