Many-- if not most-- test pilots born in 1923 never made-it to retirement age. Famed WW-II Boeing test pilot Eddie Allen died at 47 flying a prototype of the B-29 Superfortress. Lockheed test pilot Herman "fish" Salmon succeeded in collecting his gold watch-- only to die a year later at age 66 trying to nurse an out-of-license, engine-out, piston 1049H Super Constellation on takeoff from Columbus, Indiana. Chuck Year made-it to age 97. He was that damn good.
