"THE DAY OF THE JACKAL" (UK/FRA) 1973
Director: Fred Zinnemann.
Stars: Edward Fox, Terence Alexander, Michel Auclair.

A fictional story based on "Carlos The Jackal". About a assassination plot to kill the French Prime Minister. Excellently acted by Edward Fox in a low-key ('non American') style.
You have to admit, there are'nt many thriller's made today that are as good as this.
My verdict on this cool film, an excellent execution.

"THE 39 STEPS" (UK) 1959
Director: Ralph Thomas.
Stars: Kenneth More, Taina Elg, Brenda De Banzie.

This was the second film adaption of "The 39 Steps". Kenneth More is excellent as the 'hunted' Richard Hannay. And Sid James makes an early appearence as a lorry driver. The film has a real "Hitchcock" feel to it. Alfred Hitchcock's "North By Northwest" was released in the same year.

"OBLIVION" (US) 2013
Director: Joseph Kosinski.
Stars: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko.

Another sci-fi film starring Tom Cruise. He's in danger of being compared to Charlton Heston. Both of these guys will be remembered as great Actors.
The story is nothing new, but it's very well constructed. Tom Cruise is excellent. His role is supported strongly by Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko and Andrea Riseborough. "OBLIVION" has the look and feel of "AI". A cool underated film from Tom Cruise.

"THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES" (US) 2012
Director: Derek Cianfrance.
Stars: Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes, Anthony Pizza.

A film based on quality story-telling, that contains no 'CGI'. A well crafted movie set in small town USA. A morality tale about the good, the bad and everything between. We do what we have to do. Possibly the best film released so far this year.

"RUNAWAY" (US) 1984
Director: Micheal Crichton.
Stars: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Gene Simmons.

A Sci-Fi film with hints of "Blade Runner" in the storyline. Although this movie is more entertainment than thought provoking.Tom Selleck is actually quite good in the starring role. But it's Gene Simmons who steals the show as the 'lead' bad guy. This is another of those movies ripe for a remake.

Thanks for your comments re "Thundercrack" & "Loads".
I had never discovered the Produced / Director / Actor called Curt McDowell till now.
Upon reading your comments, I researched him to find his amazing movies. Shame his life was only too short.
His genra of movies seems to be like that of Joe Gage, where the "straight boy" fascination is there. I'm a "monsterous" fan of Joe Gage ......
Thanks for bringing this gentleman to my attention.
Are there any other producers of this type that you may be able to educate me on ..... ?

"EL CID" (ITALY/US) 1961
Director: Anthony Mann.
Stars: Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, Raf Vallone.

As a war film "EL CID" is epic. As a film it's a masterpiece. Charlton Heston's greatest role. As for Sophia Loren, she smoulders as usual. Made when employing countless extras for very little. Impressed everyone.

"MUD" (US) 2012
Director: Jeff Nichols.
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland.

Matthew McConaughey plays a Man in hiding. Who is befriended by two teenage boys. The story seems loosely based on "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn". Regardless, this is a great film for those looking for more than CGI. Along with "Hitchcock", this is the best film i've seen so far this year.

"SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS" (UK) 1960
Director: Robert Hamer.
Stars: Ian Carmicheal, Terry-Thomas, Alastair Sim.

Featuring three great Actors, "SCHOOL FOR SCOUNDRELS" tells a very clever tale. A film about 'Oneupmanship' and 'Lifemanship'. If you dont get it?, enjoy the film.
