I don’t know how I found these videos, but a while ago I found videos of guys in Japan changing into fundoshi. What’s interesting to me is how the person who films this has no problem zooming in on the penis, and the guys have no problem with it either. In the US, people would be scandalized. And it seems like this is not a “gay” activity at all. Just mainstream. https://vjav.com/videos/161963/naked-fundoshi-change/

Anyone know why the guys are so comfortable filming and being filmed doing this? Japanese culture must just be very different from US culture.

Japan isn’t Christian..not by any stretch of the imagination…
True, of course but I intended to point out that the USA is unusually restrictive with regard to nudity for a Christian country.
Other religions tend to have their own attitude to nudity.

These videos are mainly from hadaka matsuri, or naked festivals, and they are annual winter festivals all around the country, even in small villages. They are usually held in the coldest part of the winter and traditionally were for men to display their strength and virility. I guess if you grow up seeing all the men of the town proudly showing off their naked bodies every year at these festivals, you are naturally going to have a lot less shame when it's your turn to join in. Not to even mention the public bathhouse culture and growing up regularly being naked with your male family, friends, and neighbors.

I love these videos too! Here are some keywords you might find useful in looking for more videos
締め込み shimekomi
裸祭り hadaka matsuri
裸参り hadaka mairi
褌 fundoshi

Good luck hunting :D

Thank you, and by the way, I have a question why do they always zoom in during these videos? Is that considered socially acceptable?

No...I wouldn't say that.

I think a lot of the time they act like they are just filming the shimekomi rituals and disguise how much they are zooming in on one specific area. Actually, if you understand Japanese, sometimes there are very funny comments from the guys being filmed or their friends when they figure out what the cameraman is doing.. :joy: sometimes they politely ask them to stop, sometimes they start to get upset or embarrassed, and sometimes....they clearly love the attention, like this guy

Thanks for the response. so is the cameraman gay? Because that’s pretty much routine and all of these videos. An obligatory zoom in.

Almost certainly, yes. Or...at least made by someone intending to sell them to a gay audience. These aren't normal videos made for the participants or the community or anything like that. Some of the more popular cameramen used to have blogs where they sold them, but they're pretty much all gone now unfortunately..

Why would they agree to take part in videos like this? So is this not a so-called normal video then?

I mean...the same reason as people in any other country. It is a porn video, and they get paid. 🤷‍♂️
The series is called Out Staff by Coat. There are a bunch of them. Pretty sure in the next scene they all jerk off together in a dorm room. As far as studio porn goes, they seem very real. Highly recommend :D

I guess that's what makes the fundoshi videos so special. They are real people, not actors, out in public.

Oh okay I get it. It’s just straight up porn. I guess what got me confused is that there are also videos like this, which I believe are actually just straightforward “how to” videos, complete with nude “every day people”:

So, I thought the fundoshi videos were just sort of a casual version of this video:

I thought the fundoshi videos were just as if a regular guy took a camera into an onset or a fundoshi event and filmed his friends, and then it all sort of ended up online as a type of prank. But the fundoshi videos are just straight up porn?

Do you think this video is an actual “how to,” or is it just porn?

Well...it is a bit muddy maybe since Japan is much more relaxed about nudity..I think this is an honest "how to" by a very open-minded individual. All the random people are elderly Japanese men who don't look like they give a fuck what that foreigner is up to...they just want to enjoy a nice bath :joy:

The fundoshi videos are probably closer to this "how to" video than the Out Staff video I guess. One clue might be if the genitals are censored. Anything produced for sale in Japan by an official studio would be censored. Whereas this "how to" is made by a non-Japanese, and the fundoshi ones are amateur videos sold outside of Japan. That is also what I meant about fundoshi videos not being "normal" for Japan. They ride the line between porn and documentary, and they would be illegal to sell in Japan since they are uncensored.

Thank you for the very interesting response. It’s so confusing that Japan is so much more liberated than the United States with regard to nudity, and yet full frontal male nudity is censored in Japan.

So the scene in the “how to” onsen video seems realistic to you, but it’s obviously geared to an American audience or else it would be censored?

Thank you for all the very interesting insight.

This is quite interesting cultural differences, between nudity in general and what is porn.
Something I do notice ,bit off topic is that Japanese mean usually keep foreskin retracted, liking their style
Yes, Japanese take pride in keeping the foreskin retracted. A common insult (especially among straight guys) is to call your friend "houkei" meaning foreskin covered penis like phimosis, being "zurumuke" is a source of pride if the foreskin can stay retracted. So, guys will often instinctively retract their foreskin before their friends can see it.

Another fascinating difference because in the United States, it would be taboo to admit that you were even looking.
