Start on the large side and slowly work down till you find your perfect size. If you end up in the ER, then you have a ring that's WAY too small.

For starters, they're more durable. I've broken a number of rubber ones just form putting in on and taking it off. I also like the aesthetic of a metal cock ring better.

I don't think one is completely superior over the other. Rubber ones are easier to put on, but the metal ones aren't particularly difficult once you get a hang of it. It comes down to personal preference and after having tried a metal cock ring I prefer it to the rubber ones.
