Don't do it as much as I used to. I like (only used) metal. I have a stainless steel rod with a small ball on the end (I made it years ago for a tool used in machining... repurposed).

It feels very good when you know what you're doing. If you don't, there can be some pain, especially when urinating afterwards.
I highly recommend steel for a beginner. Silicone has a texture that many find abrasive, so it requires considerably more skill and care even than steel (I still cannot use silicone anywhere near as freely as steel). I could easily see being turned off to sounding entirely if one's initial experiences were with silicone.
The other main things you need to know are:
-clean and sterilize your sound before each use
-use lots of sterile lube
-do not force the sound (let gravity do the job gently, and do not go beyond any resistance)

Fairly new to it here too. I got the metal rods and the surgilube. I would recommend starting with the smallest size and gradually working your way up. You will feel burning the first few times, just make sure you pee to flush out any possible bacteria and the burning will go away. Make sure you use clean tools and dont force it. Probably something is off, then. Make sure you sanitize the sound first. Use plenty of sterile lube. Try to be more gentle. Don't even push the sound at all. Hold it back and let gravity slowly do the work.
I do too, I have a curve to the left and while steel sounds feel good when I'm flaccid and have a semi or almost to the point of fully erect, when I'm fully erect a sound hurts a little, whether its moving or not, lubed up to the max, not pushing, it just is uncomfortable. Oh, ok. That makes sense. I hadn't thought of how sounding works with a curved penis. It's impossible to get a straight metal rod past curves of a certain angle, but even at lesser angles I imagine it would be uncomfortable for the sound to get through that angle.
You don't tend to use the typically inflexible, metal sounds, then?
Short ones, like some 5" one I have is "beaded" and feels good, when flaccid I can stim my prostate with it, but as I get hard I have to take it out. I've been sounding for years and I've recently been using a thin screwdriver (with plenty of lube obviously) its not a flat head or crosshead but just sort of rounded and slightly rough, anyway Ive noticed even though I go slowly I seem to draw blood, its not loads but the thing is it feels so intense and good. Apparently you experience a pinching sensation which is the end of the sound gradually opening the bladder sphintcer. That's what I read. I tried to reach my bladder last year with van buren sounds but I ended up with a water infection so was on antibiotics for a week.

You just keep going. It does not hurt, but you will feel the sound penetrate the muscle/sphincter (of sorts) that keeps the bladder closed. I had zero pain going in and have been in numerous times with no problem. It actually feels good to penetrate the opening to the bladder and it is a routine thing when having a catheter inserted in a hospital.
I think if the guy from another post in this thread got a serious infection, something must not have been clean. I have sounded for years and never gotten infected.
