Am currently in Finland and have decided to take the plunge into the Finnish Sauna experience. I've chosen 3 so far that are "regular" non-gay saunas and apart from getting used to the whole ceremony that is taking a sauna, I've seen some great sights! No inhibitions here and as soon as you walk into the men's area there are guys of all shapes, sizes and ages just walking around naked. Everyone has a special small mat to sit on but towels are just used to dry off at the end so it really is bollock naked. What I've been surprised at is the number of guys (young and older) with huge hanging balls and it's always the dude that you would least expect to be either hung or have big low hangers. Quite a few guys also look shaved or trimmed...all very straight looking...and sit around chatting drinking beers before returning to the sauna or steam area.
Memorable sights:-
- 25-30 year old lad with his loud mates. The lad had an average cock but huge hanging balls. He was talking to his mates with one leg on a bench and his balls in full hanging view. Surreal sight.
- 40-50 year old toned guy with a 7-8" soft schlong hanging down almost reaching the bench below in the sauna
- skinny (20?) goth dude, loads of piercings and with no pubes or body hair. Long soft pierced cock.

The best thing was that it was 100% non-sexual. Regular guys just taking it easy.

Would love to hear about other non-gay sauna experiences and sights.

Maybe I'll do Germany next - but they have mainly mixed saunas, I hear. I like to see guys of all shapes and sizes in a natural state.

Sounds like a nice experience you had at the sauna. I find the Gym can be that way too especially when talking to other bodybuilders about health tips and exercises-the mental connection can be erotic and no one has to be nude either. In the locker room too, standing there naked or near nude talking to others can be erotic too. Being an artist I find the human body beautiful in all its forms too. Enjoy yourself!!! I wish I could find a sauna around where I live since my Gym closed off the sauna.

Question popped up on a TV Quiz / Comedy show here in the UK, on the Dave channel, called Qi.

Question was..... what does gymnasium actually mean?

Answer..... Place for men to be naked during sport

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnasium_(ancient_Greece)

What was interesting also in sports which involved a lot of running / jumping, is the way the penis was tied upright, in pretty much the same way you would tie your boot laces in a neat little bow, and when your trainer wanted you to pay attention, they would tug at this string, so to be sure you noticed.

Same with the old Olympics, all sport was done naked, right up to the 19th century.

The hotel I stayed in when I was in Vienna over New Years had a sauna in the basement. My roomie and I visited every evening to warm up (it was freakin' cold!). At the font desk, we were given big terry clothe robes and flip-lops that we wore from our room to the sauna. My roomie was a little shy at first and wore his with boxerbriefs...but there was no need...the robe was huge and went past the knees. Interesting to ride the elevator in a robe...but I got over it.

In Austria its traditional to go nude in the sauna, so once in the sauna/spa area, men and women hung their robes up, the women put towels around themselves/men just grabbed a towel, and then went to the steam room or sauna. Once in either one, you sat on the towel but didn't wrap yourself in it. Basically I kept my eyes to myself, though when sitting in a hot little wooden box with other naked people you see things. My roomie is also American and nither one of us had ever lounged with unknown nude women before, he thought it was pretty liberating. Mainly people were quiet inside, and soaked up he heat until they had enough, then would leave and take a shower to cool off and/or wash off the sweat. There were two shower heads side by side, men and women would use both with no modesty. The hotel had lounge chairs if you wanted to take a nap or cool off...the women would do that wrapped in their towels.

All in all, it was so different from anything most Americans have ever experienced. Obviously nothing sexual about it, but everybody's junk was out for everyone else to see, and no one made a big deal out of it. Its cool how quickly you become desensitized to nudity. At first you think "Jebus, his wang/her tits are out!" but once you see what a person looks like naked it quickly becomes just another body.

I'd definately do it again...the roomie and I hung out in the hot baths in Budapest few days later. Nothing like it in the USA that I have ever seen. I think the nude sauna culture is a northern and central European tradition.

You should try Imperial Day Spa- separate areas for male and female - very relaxed vibe and mostly totally nude.

Use of facilities was only around $20 when I was there last year - pay extra for massage, body scrubs, etc

IMPERIAL DAY SPA

I never got to Kabuki - only in SF for a few days.

Imperial has separate facilities for male & female, so you don't have to pick your day to be able to enjoy the facilites nude.

Others from SF agree that it is one of SF's best kept secrets - well worth a visit (I think cheaper than Kabuki too if you just want to relax with a soak and steam for a couple of hours).

Plenty of reviews on Yelp

I've been to both Kabuki and Imperial. Kabuki is much classier (very luxurious feel to it). It can be a little bit cruisy and is about 99% gay. They are very strict, however, in their no-lewd-activity policy, so it's very "clean" in that sense.
Imperial, on the other hand, is more no-frills, but super chill. The thing I like about Imperial is that you are allowed to talk, and it's easy to strike up converstaions with people. (Kabuki has a no-talking policy that they enforce as well.) Imperial has much more of a gay/str8/bi mix of a crowd, but they are very laxed on the lewd activity part, so on more than one occassion I've seen circle jerks going on in the sauna and steam room. (Usually just guys stroking themselves while watching others do the same.) It's got a bit of "DL" vibe to it.
Imperial is $20 and is open every day. Kabuki was $20 the last time I went, though it's been a while. Men's days are Mon/Thur/Sat. PM me if you want any more specific info.
In regard to the OPs comments, I have had some awesome, completely non-sexual exchanges at Imperial with some really cool guys from all over the world. It's awesome to just chill out and have a chat while letting it all hang out.

I was finally able to try Imperial Spa. Very laid back - I liked the vibe. Monday nights are apparently quite slow there, but I hear other times are much more crowded. No overtly sexual activity, but I did see a few semis. Struck up a great conversation with a very hot str8 guy. I'll be back.

Oh, and I did get the full body scrub. That is an experience like no other. Non-sexual and very intense.

Been in mixed saunas in Austria, always nude. One even had a notice up outside in several languages saying "no swimming costumes in this sauna". Not seen any sex in these saunas.

Fucking and other sexual activities are quite usual in saunas in hetero swinger clubs in England, and of course in men-only saunas.

Thanks for starting this thread donkeyboy. I would like to visit Finland someday. So what is the sauna ceremony like? Sounds like it's a combination bar/bathhouse. The Finns had similar businesses on the Iron Range in Minnesota years ago.

My girlfriend of four years is Finnish born and taking saunas is her fave past time, naturally I love taking them with her. We only make it erotic if we want to otherwise its quite normal.

Anyway! There was one occasion during the summer of last year where we decided to have a BBQ with her close friend and 3 other guys, one of the guys being the BF of the friend and the other two were his brothers. Normally when the Finnish get together for parties n whatnot a sauna always takes place at sometime and this occasion was no different.

The sauna at my other half place is quite a small one, I believe it seats just about 5 people (although they managed to get 13 in one time) so naturally there wasn't enough space for us to all go in at the same time, so we decided to spit boys/girls.

At first I felt a little uncomfortable as it was the first time I had met a few of the lads but soon warmed up to the idea. I wasn't uncomfortable at the fact that it would be all men and no women but the fact that I was the only Black person around and im 100% sure it would be the first time they would see a black person naked in person.

I'm quite content with my penis size and that "myth" of black men being well endowed doesn't apply to me but I thought there would be some looks from the Finnish men. There wasnt! It almost felt although every one was was clothed, no smerks no giggles no pointing etc, there was just unconditional respect which immediately made me relaxed and we actually had a good time. I got to know them really well, chatting and drinking cider.

The girls actually wondered why we took so long!

Its actually a shame, where I'm from people wouldn't go for anything like that Ive asked several people if they would do something like taking a sauna with someone of the same gender with the other person not being a family member or close close friend, near enough all of them said no. *sigh* I love London..

I visited an old London spa which dates back to the 1920s recently. It has Men's and women's days and most people go nude. It was one of the most wonderful experiences and while it was very sensual, it was not overtly sexual at all. I would go back every other day if I could.
