Old Buildings New Homes

I knew someone who lived in an old church - but that didn't really need renovating/converting.

On a British TV show last year, there was a couple who had turned an old fire-house into a bed and breakfast.

I love that kinda thing - always watch Grand Designs to check out build projects. :p

This is me fave one.

This is something that I would love to do. I know someone that converted an old barn. Pretty cool.

I like the barn, school house and cement factory in this artical.
Gives new life to the phrases... "Were you born in a barn?" "Were you raised in a stable?"

The stable is very cool I could move right in and start living.

I've had some renovating ideas about this old house for years...

Meanwhile I'm happy with my little mid-century modern house total gut and renovation. Actually I still have not recovered from the stress.

Yes, Balmoral could do with a spot of remodelling.
I'm happier in my semi-detached Welsh castle, tbh. :p

Here's my all-time favourite, tho. New build rather than conversion - but amazing (check out the tour and 'after' thumbs).

I love this stuff too! I bought a small farm house in New England area for the huge two (three story if you count the lower level) barn. It's amazing. I mean it could seriously hold the entire house it's so big. It was built in 1871 and the post and beam are amazing. Sadly, remodeling a barn costs more than actually building a new house. :frown1:

But, I still dream of creating an open floor plan like this.

This site is fun as well.

That looks lovely, Billi. :p
A cool, mezzanine level for the bedroom would be cool at one end of your barn, too. :D

Yeah...sigh. I was thinking with the housing market so low, and construction workers so tight on funds, maybe I could hire someone to come over and work on it slowly, but the thing is, the construction industry out here isn't suffering too badly -- i.e. they are charging more than ever! Gas prices have really hiked up the cost of materials for them. :frown1: I know a few guys who've offered to come out and work on it slowly, but wow, that would take some time, right? I dunno, gonna give it more thought this summer.

I'd love the open kitchen -- living area downstairs, with bedrooms down there too, and then open floor computer room/office on one side upstairs -- and a work out gym on the other side with a big screen tv-- 'girl cave' ?? lol

Sounds ace. I'll build a boy's version and we can compare barns. ;)

Ha, too funny. I'd of course have a hot tub and a huge sunken tub....somewhere.

Some of those home design sites are wicked addictive -- playing around with all the design options! But, you can start here!

Finding an old barn on a piece of land far away from the hussle of everyday life would be a dream. Just take how ever long it takes to make it a home. *sigh*

Too true. I love where I live. It's near a town...cough, cough...and near the mountains. I can walk right out the backyard and you won't see me again for hours. Never see anyone else up there either. Kinda cool.

The barn is useful. I have a work out area, some of my craft stuff, and of course a few zillion pieces of wood left by the previous owners. They owned the house, or their family did, for over 200 years. I find those little whiskey bottles-- airplane size?- all over the place. :) Found an old clay pipe like this too!

All in all, the barn is beautiful to look at too. So, yep, I'm keeping my ideas saved for when I win the lotto..... :biggrin1:

There's plenty out here dear. :)
You have barns out there? I know your plans, to tie me up and make me your _________.

All kidding aside I wish we could just climb up in a loft full of hay. Talking....listening....feeling. Maybe a nice rain shower would pass by to top it off.

Is it okay if I bring a cold Bud? You can have a Starbuck.....

I swear....the man of my dreams

Grand Designs is one of my favourite shows. Being a lic builder, my trade background being a brickie, I have never tired of the creativity and satisfaction the job has. I enjoy watching what others do with older buildings as well.
