always felt for Nicholas the Tzar, and his family
especially the son
Any particular reason why? They were 19th century God-anointed autocrats, stratospherically wealthy and at the apex of a system that made little attempt to better the lives of their millions of subjects.

Not saying they deserved to be imprisoned, shot & bayoneted but the idea of empathising with them - or perhaps more to the point, they with you - seems vanishingly distant.

Here they are at a fancy dress party...

So here's a little bit of US history I chanced upon... There used to be lots of buffalo in north America and they were hunted, almost to extinction, in the C.19th. Here's some happy chappies playing on a pile of American bison skulls waiting to be processed outside glueworks (Detroit, 1892).

Fair enough - and I'm not trying to be facetious or difficult, promise ;)

...but the whole of the period from WWI & the Russian revolution to the death of Stalin (so roughly 1914-1952) was drenched in blood. We can't imagine. Lots and lots and lots of people died (including members of my family, now I think of it). There were many more heroic, intelligent, short, brutal, stunted, humdrum, lost, forgotten, ordinary lives that also had weight but will never even be remembered.

I dunno...

Well, this is cheery! I should stick to posting pics...
