Question about 80s/90s American Football

One of the questions I've always had as someone that didn't play football...is that during the 80s and 90 did guys who wore jockstraps under their football pants wear any other under garment? Or was it literally their bare ass that they were showing through their football pants?

Bare ass. At least that is how it was in my school (I didn't play, either, but I went to games).
