“What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” definitely won’t be true for Alesha Cummings.
Thanks to a video on social media and a televised broadcast of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup semifinal between the Montreal Canadiens and Vegas Golden Knights, the world — at least the part that follows hockey — knows a bride and a groom attended Monday night’s game in Las Vegas. She can be seen rocking her wedding dress carrying a beer alongside a man wearing a grey tux grinning ear-to-ear.
People won’t necessarily be able to put a name to that wedding gown or that smile but the happy — and hockey-mad — couple are Cummings, a registered massage therapist originally from Fort Erie, and Dr. Amar Sanghera, an internal medicine specialist from Bloomfield, Conn., with a practice in nearby Hartford.
“Yeah, we’re bringing this home with his,” Cummings said with a laugh about their newfound notoriety.
They had intended to wed in Vegas all along but the NHL playoff schedule made their special day even more special.
“We had the day booked. We were hoping before we went there would be a game while we were there,” she said in an interview from Las Vegas. “When they released the schedule, we saw there was a game the day of.
“It just worked out. We just had to go.”
They didn’t think twice about coming to T-Mobile Arena looking they just came from the top of a wedding cake, let alone directly from the altar.
“Why not? I paid a lot of money for the dress,” she said with a laugh. “I might as well get the most use out of it.”
Though the Canadiens are the only non-American team in the final four, the couple couldn’t see themselves rooting for the Habs in the opening game in a best-of-seven series.
“Our main team was the Leafs,” she said. “Once they got beat out, we were definitely going for the Knights, for sure. That was our next team to win.”
The bride didn’t mind the “something blue” on her day of days winding up being the mood in the Habs dressing room following the 4-1 loss.
“I love Carey Price, but I don’t know what it is about Las Vegas but I hope they go all the way. I hope they win it.”
Watching a game inside an arena filled with 17,884 fans didn’t faze Cummings, an ex-pat from a country in which attendance for NHL playoff games has been capped at 2,500.
“We’re fully vaccinated, too.”
That couldn’t have happened north of the border, she was told
“Oh, I know. It’s so sad. Still in lockdown aren’t you? It’s just wild.”
They plan to spend a “couple of more days” in Las Vegas before flying home to Connecticut, “back to Bloomfield and back to reality.”
