Unfortunately, that's what I have been suspecting. It seems so odd that they'd make that decision. I could see for actual penetration, but Shia was still a fairly hot commodity at the time; you'd think the director would have jumped at the chance to show Shia's actual erection. The producer has explained that "The actors were pretending having sex, but then they had body doubles, who really did have sex, and in post production we would digital impose the two.
