The real key is starting dialogue. Shaming people by calling them out and putting them on the spot doesn't solve anything. In fact it often has unintended consequences and as your correctly say emboldens the bigot - and can cause more harm if the person has a mental health issue.

Also a lot of people who call out, tend to have the same black and white moralistic thinking as the bigot.
This! Calling someone a sexist or a racist or turning it back on them will at best achieve little and at worst make everyone even more divided. The tactic shared by OP of asking people to explain themselves might work, but may also be taken as sarcasm or an offence in its own. If you feel offended, let the other person know, let them know why and try to educate them in an amicable way. They will appreciate it more than if you hit them back with sarcasm and some might genuinely not know why what they did was wrong, so malice is not always the root of their comments.
