I also was born in the 1950s and seem to remember high school shower rooms where there were stations with 4-5 shower heads coming out of them so that 4-5 guys could gather around a single station and wash off. It was a little intimidating at first as a high school freshman but you didn't want to return to class smelling of body odor just in case the girl you were interested in got close to you.

Hell, the local recreation center I use has individual shower stalls and then a locker area for changing. I've showered, come out with a towel, and then proceeded to get dressed.
