You see, the clitoris fills with blood when aroused, and internally, becomes stiffened in part similarly the way a man’s penis does. What’s important to note is the SHAPE it makes. The internal part of the clitoris is shaped like a wide, two pronged fork that resembles a “Y” when aroused. The two legs of the “Y” rest on either side of the vagina opening. So when fully aroused a woman’s vagina attempts to actually open wider. With the help of a large penis to stretch it, a vagina opening with a fully aroused clitoris pulling it open will tend to want to stay open, hence the gape. If you study vide and still-shots of a vagina in porn, you can actually see the difference between arousal and not simply by the shape it takes, even without an open gape.
