Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)…[…]…introduced a bill on Monday that he says is about promoting people’s love of America.

The Love America Act would “promote patriotism in education” by not allowing federal money to go to any public schools that teach students about how white supremacy or racism played a role in the founding the United States. It would also require schools that receive federal dollars to ensure that students can read and recite portions of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Pledge of Allegiance at certain grade levels.

“We cannot afford for our children to lose faith in the noble ideals this country was founded on,” Hawley said in a statement. “We have to make sure that our children understand what makes this country great, the ideals of hope and promise our Founding Fathers fought for, and the love of country that unites us all.”

Hawley was one of 147 Republicans who rejected American democracy on Jan. 6 by voting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election…”

May 10, the Republican governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum, announced his state would stop paying out federal COVID-19 unemployment insurance (UI) benefits effective June 19.

North Dakota one of the first of twenty-six states — twenty-five of which are led by Republican governors — that cut off pandemic-related jobless aid over the past two months, slashing benefits for more than four million people nationwide several months before the programs were set to expire in September.

But Burgum had already been told cutting the UI programs would mean tearing apart the safety net and cutting off aid to people harmed by the pandemic — in materials prepared by his administration.

The COVID-19 jobless aid “provides [a] safety net to almost all ND citizens,” North Dakota unemployment officials noted... in a document, which also noted the program was providing “continued funds into [the] ND economy” to the tune of $9 million a week.

The internal documents revealed the crass political calculus used by officials to justify terminating unemployment benefits that have kept millions of Americans afloat during a historic deadly pandemic. And the records offer a reminder that, for all of their talk in public about protecting small businesses, politicians who cut off jobless aid knew it would punish people devastated by the pandemic and take money out of the economy.​

If Orban doesn’t want EU to dictate him how to run his country - it doesn’t make him authoritarian, it just makes him a strong leader. His program was very clear and Hungarians voted for him, all my Hungarian friends are happy with him.
Yes, he rejected EU’s demand to accept immigrants from Africa and I believe it was a very good decision. I was in Stockholm in 2013, I walked freely at night. I was in Stockholm in 2018 - there were about 60 no go zones where I was not supposed to go because aggressive immigrants could attack me. Orban doesn’t want that in Budapest which makes perfect sense to me.

Because of Orbán's curtailing of press freedom, erosion of judicial independence and undermining of multiparty democracy, many political scientists and watchdogs consider Hungary to have experienced democratic backsliding during Orbán's tenure.

Orbán's attacks on the European Union while accepting its money and funneling it to his allies and family have also led to characterizations of his government as a kleptocracy.

Between 2010 to 2020, Hungary dropped 69 places in the Press Freedom Index and 11 places in the Democracy Index; Freedom House has downgraded the country from "free" to "partly free."

Orbán's critics have included domestic and foreign leaders (including former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and the Presidents of the European Commission.

Specifically, he has been accused of pursuing anti-democratic reforms; attacking human rights of LGBT people; reducing the independence of Hungary's press, judiciary and central bank; and of cronyism and nepotism.

Anti-LGBT policies

Since his election as prime minister in 2010, Orbán has lead initiatives and laws to hinder human rights of LGBT+ people, regarding those as "not compatible with Christian values".

In 2020, Orbán's government ended legal recognition of transgender people, receiving widespread criticism both in Hungary and abroad.[113]

In 2021 his party proposed legislation to censor any "LGBT+ positive content" in movies, books or public advertisements

and to severely restrict sex education in school forbidding any information thought to "encourage gender change or homosexuality".

The law has been likened to Russia's restriction on "homosexual propaganda".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen harshly criticized the law,

while a letter from sixteen EU leaders including Pedro Sánchez and Mario Draghi warned against “threats against fundamental rights and in particular the principle of non-discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation”.

His anti-LGBT+ positions came under more scrutiny after the revelation that one of the European deputies of his party, József Szájer, had participated in a gay sex party in Brussels, despite the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic quarantine restrictions.

Szájer was one of the major architects behind the 2011 Constitution of Hungary. This new constitution has been criticized by Human Rights Watch for being discriminatory towards the LGBT+ community.​
