As an adult (18+), when was the first time you were naked around other guys in a non-sexual setting such as a locker room or communal shower, and what were your feelings/anxieties about the experience? How did the other guys react?
As a millennial in the south, such experiences are extremely rare as communal showers have become virtually nonexistent, with all public showers having stalls or curtains, and guys always change in locker rooms with towels around them or use private stalls. So my first experience with communal nudity wasn't until I was 18.
My experience:
The summer after high school, two male friends and I went on a week-long road trip to tour perspective colleges and on the last day we decided to stop by some state park which I can't remember the name of and camp on our last night instead of go to another motel. While setting up we noticed we had gotten into some serious deer ticks (if you don't know what those are, google it and prepare for nightmares, and you'll understand why removing them is very time-sensitive), so we rushed to the campsite-shop and asked if they had any kind of spray or lotion to get them off.
The lady pointed us to some tick spray, some special body wash, and recommended we also get some scrubbers and rubbing alcohol, and also offered us shower tokens for the campsite shower/laundry building. We bought the supplies and shower tokens and went to the shower building and into the men's shower room door. When you walk in, it's basically like a little locker room but with cubbies instead of lockers and the showers are around the corner.
Still not expecting the impending awkwardness, we were all facing away from each other quickly stripping and covering ourselves with our hands as we went toward the shower area with our tokens. When we got around the corner and realized that there were no stalls or curtains, only one small communal shower area with four shower heads, the dread and embarrassment was palpable as all three of us just sort of glanced at each other awkwardly for a second before entering, terrified of showering together and thus being fully exposed to each other.
My two friends were straight, and I had not yet come out to them as gay, so I was terrified that being naked around them in that setting would give me a very noticeable erection and they would know I was gay, but that fear was outweighed by the hundreds of deer ticks all over my body slowly biting and possibly infecting me with lyme disease.
At first we all were awkwardly fumbling around, inserting the shower tokens, passing around the body wash and rubbing-alcohol with one hand always firmly on our dicks to cover ourselves, but after about 10 minutes we began to care less and focus more on scrubbing the ticks off ourselves and eventually were all just showering normally without caring about our junk being out and visible. I was proud of myself for managing to remain flaccid the entire time, even when one friend made a comment about checking under his foreskin for ticks and that I and my other friend better be glad we're circumcised, which got an awkward laugh from each of us.
By the end, we remained completely naked even after showering while sitting around in the locker room area checking ourselves over to make sure we got all the ticks and spraying our clothes with the tick repellent before putting any of them back on (we had no towels).
Looking back, it was all awkwardly hilarious and served as a kind of bonding experience for all three of us. And yes, a few years later I did come out to them and they were fine with it, one of them saying he had suspected it since middle school anyway, and we all still occasionally talk despite moving away to different colleges and now living in different cities.
So yeah, that was my first, and to date only, communal nudity experience in a non-sexual setting. Sorry for the length and detail, I was a creative writing major for 2 years before switching to something else
