When i was younger I remember peeing in a open-style trough urinal in the middle of the bathroom. The guys would come up from any old side and do their business; it was basically a big rectangle. This was in Honolulu, HI in the late 90s.

It's been a long time and I've never seen something like this again. The reason I'm posting is because I'm starting to wonder if these kinds of troughs really exist. Am I crazy or remembering this wrong? Anyone else use one of these before?

I have to admit that I have a memory of being a young kid at a state fair and I thought the circular urinal was pretty strange, but I wasn't the only one using it. Years later I went back to the same fair and realized that the foot pedal to turn on the water and the soap dispenser meant it was a sink. It was kind of embarrassing when I first realized what had happened but I think its pretty funny now.

I remember going to the baseball game and it being an open trough style urinal. You just found a spot and did your business and left. That was back in the 90's. Haven't been to an Oakland A's game since then so I don't know if it still exists.

Don't worry...It was not the first, nor the last time, that guys have pissed together in the sink. (I assume beer was involved...) But if you do pee as a group, may I recommend the second floor men's room at the Congress Plaza Hotel in Chicago:

The guy in the middle always gets to have the most fun...

To clarify, the shape of the urinal works so that you would be pissing pretty much face to face with another dude.

There is truth to this. I've seen plenty of troughs on walls. What you speak if I have not personally seen yet my dad spoke of them from the 1950s when he was in the army. He said one groups guys lined on one side, more on the other side face to face dick to dick.

I think it was a wash station that would accommodate several people at a time. In the military I saw trough urinals in most latrines I used.

Troughs were once very common in some parts of the country (USA). They are still manufactured, but are increasingly prohibited by building codes and things like the ADA, although I see them still in popular use abroad.

Sadly, when my favorite bar remodeled, and had to make the restroom ADA compliant, the trough had to go. But this fixture was so beloved by the patrons that it was reinstalled as a fountain on the patio. And yes, the water running from the taps is yellow (it splattered too much, they have been moved lower since the picture was taken).

I believe they planted the cacti in front of it to discourage people from using it for its original purpose. They have since been augmented by a series of wooden posts. When it was in the restroom, when a great deal of beer caused me to have to seriously piss, I would often use it lengthwise to avoid back-splatter. So presumably having to stand behind a barrier would not prevent me from using it now. But I will not, as I am clear about the difference between piss-troughs, big round washbasins, and fountains.

What is ADA?

I remember going to NFL games and Nascar races and LOVING going to the bathroom because I could check out the guys dicks so easily. I miss those!

Davis-Monthan Air force base in Tuscon in the days it was busy with Strategic Air Command. Round urinal made out of tile, thigh high, with a fountain in the middle. You could fit 20 or more guys around it and we did every few hours.

I remember going to the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in the 70's and 80's.
I was just beginning to understand my orientation!
To-this-day, I remember standing at the trough in the middle of the room with at least 10 men
on all sides and pissing and talking beer induced smut! There were several "beauties" in the
extra large size. It was heaven on earth for a youngster with wide eyed curiosity (me) !!!
I haven't been there for 30 years - not sure if they still exist.
