AFL Players

Can confirm.

I went to a private school in Melbourne with quite a few players now in the AFL. You're right that homophobia is rife in teen years but especially in these privileged, male-centric, heteronormal, Catholic-leaning circles that soooo many AFL players come from. And unfortunately I know most of those players were guilty of that homophobia (as well as vile misogyny), and they were just instances I witnessed myself. Who knows what else they said or did that I have no idea about.

But there were also a few who never showed anything but kindness and compassion towards the gay guys at our school, as well as anyone who was considered 'different' for whatever reason. I hope that if there are gay AFL players, that they have managed to end up on the same teams as these few guys, because I know they would be great allies. It's that thought that gives me some hope...
Tom Morris got exposed for being homophobic, along with racist and misogynistic, and his career after a brief road bump only professed further and further as a reporter.

Now I think his work is one of better ones out there but that's not the point, his career suffered no consequences for that behaviour.

Now imagine how much leeway players actually get when the clubs can keep incidents private.

I've spent sixteen years in locker rooms. Football & Cricket. All I can say is, I personally wouldn't want to be the first AFL listed player to come out publicly. I like to think there would be a domino effect if it happened. One player brave enough to go public would then see others soon follow. But I don't hold anything against any past or present player choosing not to do it. Would be amazing to see it happen. I don't think we see it happen anytime soon. It will first likely be a player who has been retired and out of the game a while that may take that step. But an active player? I'd be surprised honestly.

I'm less worried about Tom Morris. He was punished. Not many of us would survive having our private conversations published for the world to see.

What's cricket like for gays?
