James Gunn will end the series because of the new DCU. Furthermore, don't think that this series would be like any other DC series on the CW, it ALWAYS showed that it would have 3 or 4 seasons, james gunn praised it a lot and always said that the series could have 5 seasons, but with the new future of the DCU arriving and confusion at Warner, it was likely that she wouldn't even get a fourth season. The series will end on its best note, there was no need to stretch it any further.
So a series ends without being cancelled when the creative team of that show makes the decision to end it.

When the network (The CW, in this case) or the studio (Warner Bros. Television in this case) decides to end the show despite the creative team's wishes, the show is cancelled.

In this case, the network (The CW) has decided to end the show. That's the definition of a show being cancelled. There is no reason to believe that Gunn and his plans for the new DCU had any effect on The CW's decision to cancel but even if Gunn - as a Warner Bros. executive - had made the decision, that would still be cancelled.

The other stuff you say about how the show being always planned to be shorter is just ficiton. That was not always the plan.

ok, your opinions are facts, gays on a forum know more than news pages with direct relation to the production of the series and Warner Bros. james gunn lied too, you are right.

I mean James Gunn definitely lied about the cancellations of Titans and Doom Patrol. He claimed that they were cancelled before he started the job as DC CEO but the showrunners of both shows were talking about their hopes and plans for their respective then-possible fifth seasons well after he started the job.

That being said, even in the statement that the showrunners put out jointly with The CW, they directly say they are sad to see the show end early. It's right in the statement. Feel free to read it. And again, that's the official statement that is joint with the network. In other words, that is the place that the showrunners are most likely to be polite.

The show was cancelled.

So, in conclusion... it got cancelled.
A show getting cancelled happens at the end of a season that was not intended to end the show on. If they have the info ahead of time, the show is considered ending, because the show will end without loose ends, etc.

This is preferable to just killing a show on a cliffhanger, which is the usual association to "cancelled."

It was not intended by the production to end the show with this season.

Their budget was slashed massively and they were told by the CW it would be the end. Hence, they could plan for it. That is a cancellation with some notice. Both happen and are common. Some are told by their networks ahead of time they are going to be cancelled, some are not. The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Arrow, etc. ended their runs by their own choice inside the shows themselves. Westworld, The Flash, etc. did not.

Why is there a debate on the definition of cancelling a TV show in this thread lmao like it's ending, Alex will have to find another job (hopefully on screen, he's been showing signs that he could follow Joshua Rush and move into politics what with his always showing up at the UN) who cares what is it called in regards to the show?
