Are men becoming more shy?

I think back in the day men (atleast in the west) used to be more comfortable being in underwears or even naked around other men in locker rooms, dorms, washrooms, showers, etc. They even used to be more comfortable in wearing briefs/ bikini briefs/ jockstraps (for sports only) but in my opinion, today men have become more shy, they try to cover themselves more when around other men in gym/ dorms etc. They feel less comfortable in being naked around other men. Wearing briefs or bikini briefs is off the charts. I want to ask if you guys also have observed the same trend in men becoming more shy these days? if yes, What could be the cause behind the change in this trend? Also, it seems like women, on the other hand, have become less shy in clothing than they used to be back in the day? what do you guys think?

I grew up in Europe where nudity is not uncommon. Since I could walk clothing was an option in my family home. My parents while NOT actual nudists by name or title rarely wore clothes at home or on the beaches. Here in the states, I think men have become self-conscious of their naked bodies because of body shaming, humiliation, etc. much like what women have gone through. It makes no sense to me whatsoever and frankly having to switch gears when traveling abroad and coming back to the states is rather daunting to be honest!

Here in my home if you come over unannounced don't expect me to dress because you are there. My wife and I never wear clothes at home!

Because men like you exist. Why do you care? Can't be a creep and stare at them in bathrooms and locker rooms anymore?

I can not think of the last time I really saw another male in his underwear. even if I did today, unless it was a pink, sequined / rhinestone covered thong with ass cheeks sticking out I truthfully and really would not care. Even then my reaction would not be from fear; but more of a WTF . I guess I classify as a straight male; and yes I do own breifs. Some pants based on their cut / slimness and material thickness, just work best with the smaller brief cut undergarments.

Seems to have been the trend for last 20 years or so. Back when I college age, showers were open gang style so everyone got naked to wash after exercise. Since those have been phased out at schools and now pretty much everywhere else, it seems many are uncomfortable with nudity even in locker rooms.

At some point I think they are . Now a days if with a younger guy they’d get naked and cover their private area.. years ago with I was with someone .. getting naked and the guy seeing you naked wasn’t hidden .. walking around the house naked with someone or a bunch of guys hanging out being naked was pretty common in my house

interesting to know, and what do your neighbors or friends feel about that? I hope they don't complain

hmm, that sounds fair

I had unauthorized photos taken of me with a cellphone. I reported it and he was thrown out of the gym and the photos deleted from his phone. The police did confiscate his phone to make sure he wasn't doing this habitually and the gym also revoked his membership. I'm not shy and comfortable changing/unchanging in locker rooms but since then not like I used to be.

Correct. Guys are no longer growing up with communal nudity and can't deal with it later in life.

I also think yes, men seem more shy about nudity in a communal settings. You see it in the message board here in the number of posts about people having anxiety about being naked in locker room settings. You see it in the locker room designs where they have installed cubicals rather than open shower areas. Even as someone with social anxiety issues when younger an open shower wasn't something I ever thought twice about. I wonder if it is being raised in an environment where people aren't seen naked in a non-sexual setting, perhaps combined with porn availability resulting in the only context for nudity being 100% sexual.

That is a very good point. It's assumed there's a sexual motive or threat if someone gets naked in a change room.
As a nudist, these are topics of regular discussion among my friends. Aside from the perceived sexual threat, another reason young men won't get naked is because they think their penis is too small. All they have seen is what porn has to offer, and have not grown up with reality. From my days of school showers, and then being a nudist, I quickly learned that most men do not have huge penises.

makes sense..

mh definitely.

aside from all the tiktok gym thots ha

meanwhile, women are being told to be more outgoing ha.
i agree with you :), considering today's world of equality where everyone is allowed to do anything without being judged.. but seems like men are judged more..

good point, do think that women also have same sexual threat while naked among other women?

It's the inevitable consequence of societal tolerance/acceptance of non heteronormativity. There are gay and bi men amongst us and I suspect more straight men are as uncomfortable in being in communal nudity with them as a straight woman would be with men whom aren't even attracted to her. The male gaze of men is palpable and we as modern straight men largely aren't looking to be the willing fuel for another guy's erection.
Not that I would ever suggest it, but if some social imperative was put into place that separated changing areas amongst sexualities like they currently do for gender, my guess is that communal nudity amongst straight men would return to a norm, and then all the introspection could be geared towards whatever level of nudity occurs in the gay rooms.

This actually exists amongst young men not inundated with porn as well, especially in their dealings with today's super hypergamous young women. Perhaps it doesn't maintain long term, loving relationships later on in life, but with upended socioeconomic dynamics at play in the dating market, an unearned big dick tends to pay off much sooner and more frequently. I get past age 25 your average woman is looking for a lot more, but you'd be very hard pressed to find a sexually active 18-24 yr old woman not name a larger than average dick as a preferential standard for sexual interest. Hits a lot different than say, 50-60 yrs ago when the average young man that had graduated high school and got a local factory job was considered a catch to most young women his age, irrespective of his penis size, or height.

Definitely a valid point, and I have seen mention from time to time that straight men are worried about being looked at by gay men in the change room. 25 odd years ago when I was last in a communal changing area, visibility and social awareness of gay men was much less than it is now.
I suppose I had largely forgotten about this aspect, because I've been in the nudist world for so long, where this actually isn't an issue.

I hadn't really thought about that since I'm gay, so it's very interesting to get the straight perspective. I had naively assumed it was just gay men who were obsessed with dick size.
