I would say more than ever they are in. I have been into them for years and even run a youtube channel about mens underwear / thongs. The majority of brands have a thong option which didn't use to be the case. It is always personal preference but I think they are sexier than jocks.

I wouldn't call them mainstream but more popular than they have been for guys

I think it's mostly a man for other curious men thing. Sure my wife likes me in them... But there are a lot of others that kinda go "ew" when it's a guy not in the best shape. Fortunately for me, my wife likes me in them.
