Are western men afraid of wearing brief style underwear?

Underwear choice can depend on various factors but on a general note, I want to ask if men wearing smaller underwear (like briefs/bikinis/tanga briefs, etc) is considered gay in western world? as I think wearing briefs type underwear is perfectly normal (not associated with being gay or straight) in eastern side of the world, but seems like western world has its bias towards men wearing smaller underwears. what is your guys opinion on this depending upon where you live? Is wearing briefs perfectly normal just like women wearing bikinis/lingerie or does men wearing briefs/tangas raise eyebrows and questions in your area? also, if women's style of underwear/swimwear is not associated with her sexuality, then why should men's underwear style should define his sexuality especially in the western world which is big on liberalism? thoughts?

I grew up wearing wearing briefs and did so well into middle age - even bikini briefs. Almost all of my straight friends did too. It was/is normal.

If parents bought their boys boxers they prefer boxers as adults. If parents bought their boys briefs they prefer briefs as adults. It's almost always true in my experience.

IMO underwear doesn't define sexuality. Gender is different. For example the second guy I slept with identified as a woman and wore women's underwear as well as women's designer jeans and other clothing though skirts & dresses only in private.

I switched to boxer briefs in my 30s then to boxers or going commando when clothing choices allowed. There have been times where a jockstrap is required depending on what I'm wearing.

Since becoming semi-retired and fully retired I go commando most of the day.

50 here from US. Growing up it was all hanes or FTL tighty whites. As boxers and boxer briefs came into popularity I gave them each a try but never found them comfortable. Now I wear only brief type underwear. As a big guy I have found the options for big mans underwear have increased a lot lately. I can now get bikini or string bikini briefs in my size 44-46 easily.

When I was a kid everyone wore briefs, that was all that was available though. Boxers became the underwear of choice around middle school and then by the time I was in highschool most guys wore boxer briefs.

I personally think briefs look great but just aren't that comfortable to wear all day. Boxers are comfortable, but can't be worn with all clothes, and sometimes you really just want a little bit of extra support. Boxer briefs are the best of both worlds; they offer decent support, are form fitting, but don't ride up and make horrible lines in certain pants.

I think underwear choice is mostly a fashion thing, that is, the style changes every now and again. But there's also a very real comfort aspect involved as well, and that's why boxer briefs have been so popular for so long.

Here in the US, the transition away from tightie-whities and plain white boxers that our dads and granddads wore started happening many decades ago, in the 1980s. I believe it was simply the fashion industry coming up with something new and different. Joe Boxer brand started with printed boxer in 1980, and they were a huge hit. The rest is history.

Most of my straight mates wear boxer briefs during the day to work but switch to briefs for sports, gym or to wear on a night out.
I like to see a guy in black briefs the bulge area looks more impressive
Thongs give the best support for the gym especially under compression pants!

I wear briefs and jockstraps and don’t really care what others think but I do wonder why guys will fight with pulling down their boxers or boxer briefs as they ride up. I thought the boxer briefs were a fad but it seems harder to find briefs in stores now so I’m not sure why.

I pretty much wear Seperatec underwear. …..briefs, boxers, microfiber, bamboo and cotton. I like the feel.

Do you mean "Western" as in "Western" culture: Europe, USA, Canada? Or do you mean Western part of the American continent as opposed, say, to the east coast of the state or Canada?

The fact he says “western world” is sort of a giveaway he’s talking about culture, not just one or two countries (despite one of those countries thinking they are the world!)

I figured, but still, Western World is ambiguous enough I thought I'd ask. I know people in the west of the US that think their "world" is THE world.

I think fashion is changing more toward briefs again and it can take a while for something to be "cool" again.

Other things:

- Briefs are assumed to be feminine by some people.
- They show off your legs, ass, penis, so they catch more attention. Some consider it to be embarrassing to be seen in your briefs over longer underwear because of the exposure element.
- Some think they're associated with LGBTQ culture, and especially in grades 6-12 kids don't want anyone to question their sexuality.

It can also be the opposite. In the 70s, briefs were the mainstream underwear among younger guys and so guys may have worn them even if they liked boxers instead to avoid getting teased about "grandpa underwear."
