During the conscription process of the USSR, recruits underwent a thorough and rigorous inspection to determine their ''fitness'' for military service. This process typically included the following steps:
1. Physical Examination (медицинский осмотр/meditsinskiy osmotr): Recruits were required to undress and undergo a thorough medical examination. This involved checking their height, weight, eyesight, and overall physical health to ensure they were fit for military service.
2. Political Scrutiny and Loyalty Test (проверка верности/proverka vernosti): After the physical examination, recruits had to stand completely nude before a committee of officials (комиссия/komissiya). This committee's role was to assess the recruit's political loyalty.
3. Background Checks (проверка биографии/proverka biografii): The committee also carried out extensive background checks to verify the recruit's family and personal history aligned with state ideals.

The setting for these interrogations was often adorned with portraits of Lenin, Trotsky, or Stalin, hanging on the walls behind the committee. These portraits served as a constant reminder of the regime's authority and ideology, emphasizing the omnipresence of state control.

During the Vietnam War, similar procedures occurred in the US, where recruits were sometimes interviewed in the nude during their physical examinations and induction processes.
