so why didn't they just call it "ally" of the year award then? why do they have to emphasize "hetero"? cuz one's heterosexuality shouldn't be anyone else's business, should it?
The point is that to recognize someone who is not HBTQ (or identifying as such) who is a real ally and supporter of HBTQ people. In a world where HBTQ people are out, especially at the Gala, and identifying as not straight, it seems strange – at least to me as a Swede - that there is something offensive about recognizing that someone who is heterosexual also deserves recognition for being an ally without being HBTQ.
It's a long tradition of the QX Gala and I don't know too many Swedes upset about it. The same is true for the Årets Homo award. Calling someone a "homo" in other countries would probably cause an uproar. It's meant to be tongue in cheek.
Benji was not being outed. He chose even with the award to suggest he's not yet identifying as homo or queer. He didn't have a problem with it clearly, so I I do not see the problem.
