Number #1, totally dig this guy. Can't wait to see Titans. Number #2, I feel like he didn't immediately grasp the context she meant in the question. She says partner (meaning romantic, of course), but he either didn't perceive that the same way or wanted to clarify because his immediate statement afterward is "well, they're very different."
