Good of him to share that. It doesn't surprise me that he struggled along the way, made some questionable choices, etc, before getting himself together. I never came out to my parents. I got the sense it would have been too much for them, but I'm relatively sure they knew I was gay. After my brother and both parents died, I told my nephew I was gay and his response was "Duh". We spend a lot of energy worrying about being open and honest when those who know us best know already.
