I was used to riding in ordinary cars like Chevy and Oldsmobile. It was 1940 and I was 7 years old. On this occasion , I felt almost sorry for the driver of an old 1938 La Salle sedan that I was riding in towards Antietam Battlefield. After all it was 2 years older than my Dad's new 8 cylinder Oldsmobile. Well, the La Salle thrummed powerfully and silently and pulled the mountain foothills swiftly. It rode silken smoothly and I was mesmerized. I never forgot the experience of how golden the La Salle really was. It was not just a car , it was magical. How sad it was to see this marvelous creation get shuffled out of existence because it was just too competitive with Cadillac.

My Dad was pulling a steep grade in second gear in his 1939 Oldsmobile, doing 25 miles per hour on Virginia's Skyline Drive. My brothers yelled from the back seat look what is catching us. Out of nowhere, a soft yellow car came from behind and passed doing at least 60 mph and sped up hill, then out of sight. It was the first time I had experienced the fast car my brothers were calling a Cord. It was love at first sight.
