These were impressive over the road flat head V8'S with smooth ride. I drove back and forth from Baltimore to Fort Gordon in one like this in 1955 averaging 65 mph and 25 mpg. Contrary to what many think, high speed driving has been around for a very long time.

It's a beauty. This was the first year that Pontiac introduced an overhead valve V8. I had the lighter Chieftain with the same V8 engine but also with a Power Pack booster. Its was a great performer , but not as fast as the Oldsmobile and Cadillac versions. I had it for all of 3 months when I got drafted in October 1955.

This is how we air cooled cars in the late 40's and early 50's. They were evaporative window coolers often called swamp coolers. They worked best at cruising speeds.
