I don't pretend to be a football fan, but my understanding is Michael Sam wasn't a particularly standout player talent wise. Nassib has already proven his abilities for many years. Also, that was 2014 -- an eon ago in the struggle.

And, I'm not attributing any of this to the goodwill of anyone in a position of power (pretty sure a bunch of them are ginormous homophobes), but when it comes down to it they are cold hard businesspeople first and foremost. The segment of hateful fans is no match to the new outreach & business opportunities (read: cash) this will generate. Even a large part of the traditional/conservative fandom would simply don't care, or not care enough to stir up shit, so it's a sum win for them.
But, regardless of all these analyses there is the possibility it will all go wrong for him, which is what make his stand so courageous. We can't ever imagine what it's like for him to be the first, but because of him so many after him will find the path easier. That's why we cheer on him today.
Oh I have no doubt Carl Nassib will be playing this fall. This was easily the best "coming out" I have ever seen. The refreshingly straightforward and unambiguous statement of "I'm gay." The generous donation to, and spotlight upon the essential Trevor Project....the Instagram pics with his Mom, Grandmother and little nephew.... the broad statement of support from Roger Goodell, etc. Plus he has never been on Twitter.

He's massive. And has a good head on his shoulders. I like that he wants to promote financial literacy w/ his teammates. The people who bash someone for suffering less are miserable SOBs. That he can so easily pass as straight, continue to play ball and not make waves is why this is worth celebrating. And as others have pointed out, his simple video posted to Instagram is hardly the way to capitalize on his newfound fame if he wants to (compared to, hem, Underwood). This is huge for the sport. An active player coming out is brilliant. His donation was incredibly supportive and welcomed. Honestly, this is everything you should be doing as a wealthy man coming out. What you don't do is team up with Amazon to sell us TV's and headphones for Pride Month and only come out because of a book deal/Netflix deal, Colton....

I have known a number of people with the last name Nassib and they have all been Lebanese-Americans. Yes, Nassib is an Arabic name. As far as I know Carl and both of his parents were born in the US and so he probably had a grandparent or great-parent who came to the US from the Middle East.

Can we not with the locker room fantasies? But yes, teammates frequently know way beforehand. Some of these players may be male homophobic or anti “gay”, but there have been tons of guys who’ve been “out” within the locker room/organization just not publicly. It’s beneficial to him (and other male “queers” in the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc) that he’s already established in the league but isn’t near retirement.
