it's just from when he first started out and was for the gay youth mag XY....and I don't know the other guy's name

I believe the legend goes that the guy is Colton's at-the-time boyfriend. Colton was pretty much openly gay at the time, it's just that no-one knew who he was. Once he was marginally more famous and started getting acting as well as modelling jobs, his agents forcibly closeted him "for his career".

They went around trying to scrub this photoshoot off the internet, claiming it was just a paid modelling gig and we shouldn't read anything into it, and maybe even that Colton might have been 17 in the pics and therefore underage (not sure if that part's true or not). This is of course what contributed to Colton's anxiety and mental health issues that ruined that same acting career by forcing him to leave his roles in Teen Wolf and Arrow right at their heights.

Of course XY magazine itself is full of controversy. It was created specifically for the young gay crowd as a way to show gay teenagers as happy and pretty instead of plagued with self-loathing. But the fact that it had lots of pictures of cute teenage boys making out with each other led it to be accused of paedophilia by the right-wing fundie frothers. Then the guy who created it became a right-wing fundie frother ex-gay himself, and ended up getting a film made about him starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto and Charlie Carver (ironically a castmate of Colton's from Teen Wolf; the two later return to the show playing boyfriends).
