David archuleta

not show business, the church. that's why he struggled with his sexuality for so long, and was even willing to go ahead and marry a woman. once he decided to break from their chains and come out, they didn't accept him, so him and his mom left the church
No, it is also show business. People forget how homophobic and queerphobic the culture was during these days of American Idol. There were several contestants who were made to stay in the closet or downplay their sexuality and there was even one contestant who detransitioned in order to compete in the show. And then there was Adam Lambert who was obviously a flamer but was not out yet.

While that's true about American Idol, Archuleta and Lambert are two very different cases. David was 16 years old who had grown up in Utah in the LDS church and had a very over-protective father who was a stage dad nightmare. Adam was 27 years old, grew up in San Diego and had been performing in musical theater as an adult for 8 years.

If you want to give an example of American Idol homophobia, Zachary Travis (aka Kirk Cummings) is a prime example of how Fox exploited and ridiculed contestants for any personal trait that they felt wouldn't appeal to their conservative American base. For those who made it through the audition process and went to Hollywood, all were treated like any entertainment product- clothes, hair/makeup, song choices and melodramatic video vignettes that looked much like something from "Hunger Games".

David wasn't "de-gayed" by American Idol like other contestants because he was still very much a teenager who was still trying to figure it all out. American Idol did leak a bunch of negative press about David's father and the father's clashes with the production crew.
