I said it before, but I'll say it again: it's the personality that draws me to Derek. (Which DOES NOT mean I agree with everything he says.)
I know he lost alot of fans that have moved on and he'll likely never get back.
But personally, I find his turnaround quite inspiring: it makes him more of a person and less of an object. (Though I do find Current! Beefy! Derek to still be quite a stunning looking guy.)
And (as someone who lost multiple loved ones to cancer) my heart and prayers go out to Derek, his mom, and the family.
