Dunno about "normal", esp in the UK where the gym culture might be different, but:
1. I belonged to a univ gym in the mid 80's when I was in my mid 20's and the sauna there was a fantasy from true: constant possibility of circle jerks and you could easily get a guy to go round the corner to a little-used stairwell if you wanted a blow job.
