It has always been a setup. It's still a reality show, and on top of that, it's an MNET reality show. They all follow the same formula. At the start, these shows would only focus and highlight on 3 types of contestants: trainees with an already-popularity (as they bring mainstream viewers), trainees that potentially make good narratives (drama, sad backstory, prone to evil-edit, comic relief, etc.), and trainees that the producers themselves are biased towards. As the shows nearing the end, the last type would become a priority.not to shade other trainees but it absolutely fvcking crazy how he got 3 stars whilst others who obviously didn't perform as well got 4... made no sense then, makes no sense now... he was truly top 10 most talented trainees in that room
Right from the start, Sung Hanbin was the obvious number one candidate favored by Mnet themselves. I'm not complaining, because the guy's talented, has the skills, personality and look, like a complete package already, so he's a fair candidate in my personal opinion. But the show would still constantly remind viewers by highlighting him prominently through the episodes. By giving him only 3 stars in the beginning, there would be a room for character development narrative trying his best and all, which would end up with the mentors noticing and saying "Oh my God, he's improved so much!". And all this would make his positive image in the public eyes even greater or so Mnet hoped .
