The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame original news photograph, 1930. The most famous quartet in the history of the collegiate gridiron, these Knute Rockne apostles made South Bend the capital of the football world during their reign. This image was snapped by an "Associated Press" photographer and bears the service stamping and a paper caption on verso.

Yale baseball team albumen cabinet photographs, 1892-93. The image with the "92" jerseys includes William Walter "Pudge" Hefflefinger, seen towering above his teammates in the back row. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, Pudge was a three-time All-American at Yale under Walter Camp. Also, it is worth noting that the 1893 Yale team won the first ever national champion event for college baseball at the Chicago World's Fair.

John Taylor, USA Olympic runner and first black Gold Medalist, 1908. Twenty-eight years before Jesse Owens humiliated Adolf Hitler at the 1936 Berlin Games, this son of former slaves ran the 400m third leg of the Medley Relay at London as part of the victorious American team, becoming the first black man to claim Olympic Gold. But less than five months after his moment of glory atop the Olympic podium, Taylor would be claimed by the 1908 typhoid epidemic, honored as "the world's greatest negro runner" in his New York Times obituary. On this photograph, he's signed his name and added his "U of P" (University of Pennsylvania) alma mater as a notation. Taylor may not have the widespread public profile of Owens or Tommie Smith, but the importance of his brave, early service to athletic racial integration cannot be overstated.

I am clearly getting old as I have never seen a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger before and thought ‘He’s handsome’ (obviously appreciated his other assets on many a occasion ) but I have to say he looks very sexy in this photo. Of course, it may just be the attraction of youth! :)
