How short should men's shorts be?

I lived through short shorts in the 70s. My soccer uniform as a kid was short shorts with calf high white socks with the stripes at the top. I'd share a team pic from back then, but I'm trying to not break any rules. In middle and high school in the mid to late 80s, again short shorts were the gym uniform. While today's basketball shorts are hilariously baggy and go past the knees... That's a bit too much, I don't want to go back to the short shorts days either.
