Which is a dumb move because december is when ad revenue is higher and youtubers make more money, it's why vlogmas became a thing and why youtubers tend to post a lot more in December

I think you're confusing professionalism with sincerity. The "Professionalism" you're describing is bought i.e. with fancy microphones, editing software, and most importantly, TIME. The older ASMR guys you enjoy have been in this game a long while and have comfortable means and a well-established audience to fall back on. This has led to drastically over-produced stuff that reeks of artifice just as much as the lowest grade shit you're condemning. Lloyd is a unique exception in that his videos are far from "pristine", as you think - Thank God. His most recent is filled with white noise and background disturbances and he sometimes hesitates and that all adds to the charm.

The best ASMR is watching someone completely committed to a task and approaching it in a calm, delicate way. That can be accomplished irrespective of the equipment. Hence the prevalence of "Unintentional ASMR".

A lot of young people getting into ASMR today don't have the same kind of security or immediate funds as those you're referencing. The best they can stretch to is their phones or a Blue Yeti. Today's climate seems to encourage multiple hustles. Hell, even professional athletes are opening OF accounts to keep themselves afloat. It's an awful environment to work in, but it's the one we've got, and the result of this - yes- is a lot of young guys who use ASMR as a prolonged ad for their other social media accounts. You can tell them from a mile off, and unfortunately the ones with the biggest biceps and shortest attention spans who often get the most subscribers. What's more, there's this constant anxiety that if they give themselves 100% into something that they might be written off as being cringe, or just plain mediocre. This isn't just on YouTube. It's day-to-day living and rather sad trend to watch.

But please don't use this as an excuse to write off all under 30s as being insincere or having some ulterior motive. There are many out there who come into ASMR genuinely wishing to help people relax and sleep. Just because they're not favoured by the Algorithm doesn't mean they're not there or worthy of your attention. To quote Reagan, of all people "You just don't know where to look".
