I've been living in Japan for 2yrs now and working in a corporate business with Japanese people. I have been observed that Japanese people are very reserved. They don't talk about much of their personal matters, even if they are close to each other. And most of them are very secretive, so if other people find out what they are doing, then they will quit. And mind you, there are laws in Japan that if you have work for a company, then you are not allowed to work other jobs. If they are going to find, then you will be fired.


So, please, as much as possible, better to give their own personal space.

Ok, let's explain it a bit better.

No, it's not illegal to have multiple jobs.

However, it is common practice on big Japanese companies to establish on the contract that you are not allowed to have another job/income source, and legally wise it's ok to make such contracts, so what happens is that most of Japanese population that has "nice jobs" is not allowed to double work, indeed. And even if they did it hidden, their companies would most likely find out because of how tax declaration works here. The only way of successfully hiding a second job is if it is 100% informal, as in cash in your hand and that's it.
On my previous job I had a colleague who quit because my then employer understood that he getting a cash prize at an amateur wrestling competition was double work and thus not allowed. He just said fuck it and left. Well deserved I would say.

That being said:

1. That's a luxury of good paying jobs. If your pay is shit and you still want to come up with such bullshit, people will simply not work for you. Companies know that and in the lower income groups of society such barriers do not exist.

2. Japanese society as any other is changing, and even in big companies double work permission has been in the rise.

3. Most models are students and informal workers anyway, so I honestly don't think hiding double work is the issue here. Considering that these big studios like coat do all the paper work properly, anyone doing double work while hiding would be found at tax declaration anyway.

I would say part-time jobs falls under my first remark. Low-paying positions can't afford creating these rules.
Japanese society has a problem of not enough workers in general, and it's specially felt in the service industry. If you start coming up with such bullshit to your part-time clerks, cleaners and such you will end with no staff because they will just find somewhere better, lol.

So it's usually not a problem.

i have no idea the details or why (since i have foreign citizenship), but across the east sea, double jobbing was prohibited in my FT employment contracts (i haven't bothered to read one in many years though, so maybe that's changed). i dunno if it's this way everywhere here, but i submit my government-issued tax claims to my employer, who then files my tax documents with the government. i figure were i to ever double job without seeking explicit permission, i'd have to be paid in cash.

with my previous employer where i didn't have a contract and was not FT, i did take on gig work with another above-board employer and got some disapproval when tax time came about.

I wasn't referring to that, actually. The industry in "service industry" refers to any type of business area, so "service industry" is referring to any business that's not focused on manufacturing. For example hospitality, retailing, education, health care and such.

Yup, and it’s illegal. But other people find way to get another job, but its kind of difficult as japanese is know for their workaholic. Like if you have another job, then how many hours left for you to rest.
