Jockstraps a thing of past in sports?

I think you're essentially correct... except... there are those of us who actually do wear jockstraps for sports. I don't think we're in the majority by any means, which is too bad, but jocks, while I admit have a long -established appeal for gay guys, are not 100% fetish items.
That said, I can't deny that I think jocks look hot and I will linger in a locker room in my jock if I think anyone's watching, so yeah, there's the whole gay connection but again, it's not solely that for some guys.

looking into buying my son a jock for baseball, anyone feel free to message me tips/ideas cause ive never used one
Well, I guess you need to start with buying a few of your own so if he has questions, you can answer.

Why would you want to embarrass the poor kid like that?
If you're talking about a CUP supporter which is necessary in certain baseball positions,, explain to him and show him yours if you have one. If you don't, better not go online and search while he's there cuz you'll get porn.... unless you go to a sports store site like Dick's. If you're talking about a regular jockstrap without the pouch, you won't find them in stores, and unfortunately, as HZS points out, it'd be embarrassing for him in all probability; it was embarrassing for some guys even back in the 70's when we all wore them, but nowadays NO ONE wears regular jockstraps any more. More's the pity. He'd have to strip and pull on a reg jock; could he do that?

Wore a cup jock growing up playing baseball (through college) and football (through high school).

Will still use a swimmer/jogger jock for long runs because the liner in running shorts don’t support well and compression shorts just get soaked swamp ass/crotch.

Not to sound dumb what swimmer/joggers jockstrap
A swim/run jock has a thinner waistband

Hey guys are jockstraps a thing of the past that boys and guys used to protect themselves in sports and working out?

Today I went to the Target store looking for one. I figured I check sporting goods there was none. So I decided to check men's underwear section nothing there either.

So I thought I was doing the right thing I stopped a male worker and asked.i could not have been more wrong he looked at me a little funny then says wait here while I discreetly ask another associate. Made me feel as if I was doing something possible wrong. Then comes back says there on our website.

It left me shaking my head thinking to myself did I miss something! Did I do something wrong? What up with discreetly Do guys still use them for sports to protect the junk. Let me know.

Just honest thought!!
Certainly the sports department and I guess the assistant was younger and geeky. For some poor souls anything to do with the genitals is a bit spooky - thats why they have self-service.
It reminds me of going i nthe chemists and asking for Condms - not at a whisper - just to register the look.

cup jocks are maybe still acceptable, but when's the last time you saw an athlete wearing a regular jockstrap? Alas, an American icon has long been on the chopping block... : (

Throughout high school and college, I never checked whether or not my teammates ever wore jock straps. I wore boxer briefs and used a protective cup.

If people are not aware, jock straps keep everything in place, but they don't protect from impact. Protective cups are highly recommended for athletes who play contact sports.

You make an excellent point. Unbelievable, even legit sites on the internet that discuss jockstraps, cup straps etc sometimes fail to make that distinction. I have seen sites that say, "The function of a jockstrap is to hold a protective cup in place." Argh! Drives me crazy that people don't differentiate because they don't know why better.

For a while, I wore a "legless" jock--a supporter with no leg straps meant to just hold our cock and balls in the pouch but not necessarily to keep them from swaying all over the place like a real jock--and then a cup brief over that. The interior jock made it easy to position my balls snugly in the cup. Worked perfectly.
Sometimes I"d reverse it: I'd wear a sports brief with a good pouch ( I have a CK sports brief that must be 18 yrs old by now) and then a Bike cup strap over that.... and then I discovered thanks to Nutty Buddy's advert, that a regular jockstrap over a regular sports brief (or indeed over just another regular jock) actually works better for holding the cup in place. Ya just pull on the outside jock and slip the cup in between the pouches. It presses the cup most securely against your body, which a cup strap doesn't always do.

As others have noted, jockstraps have not been widespread (Ha!) for decades. They started to wane in the later 80's, I think. Others have noted here that compression shorts took their place, even tho such shorts SUCK at ball support. I think the open ass of the jockstraps always been a target for gay-comments. Does anyone know why the ass is open? Some guys say it's too avoid extra sweaty "swamp ass." Myself, I just wonder if it isn't economics: less material in the manufacturing.
Certainly they been associated with gay men since their creation. you can find pics from the 1950's and before that are homoerotic, and ever more explicitly the later you go. that said, ALL the guys I went to HS with in the 70's wore jocks. We all did. It wasn't even questioned.

Like you, I went to a sports story perhaps 10 years ago and asked a young man at the counter, "Do you guys sell jockstraps?" I did the because it as a cheap thrill, I admit. The older man, possibly 40, who was this kid's boss heard this and immediately stepped in to divert me. It was clear the kid have no idea what a jockstrap was.

And yeah, I used to see 'em in stores, including men's clothing stores and plain ol' drugstores (usually sole Ace jockstraps, which sucked, but sometimes Bauer and Black, which didn't), and in 2014 I stumbled on a small independent sports store that still had a display rack of Bikes. I wanted to buy the entire display, but even I couldn't do that, so I bought 5 of them, I think. This nice girl of a certain age wrote down my order in neat handwriting on their old-fashioned carbon copy pad. I recall seeing the word "jockstrap" in her handwriting. I found myself wondering what she was thinking.

I've found two vintage REAL Bike jockstraps on eBay. I've had them for like 2 years. On one of them, the pouch threads are starting to come out and make little "loops." The other one is holding up ok.
Do not buy jocks from Bikeathletic.com. The "classic" one isn't really like the vintage ones. Also, I order sports briefs from them, but the pouch is way too small.
I'm just curious but what is the difference between the old Bike jockstraps and the ones they sell today?

I find it hard to describe. The old one seemed to "wrap" your cock and balls in a pouch that felt great, esp over time. The newer ones are close in design but they feel rough to me. I don't know how to explain it.

The new ones eventually get there, Mine took many washings before it got to the point where I felt it was really comfortable. Even then, I feel that for the price, it should be better. GYM and Golberg both offer jocks with the same classic look, but are comfortable from day one, and are 1/2 to 1/3 of the cost of the Bike.
