Jonathan Bailey

I’ve been obsessed about everything Jonathan since Bridgerton season 2 came out.

already watched all of the videos I could find on YouTube, listened to his songs from musicals on Spotify. Now I’m watching Crashing on Netflix.

What else Jonatan related could I watch ??
He’s in a Phoebe Waller-Bridge sitcom called Crashing… Trust me, if you’re a fan of Bailey, it’s definitely worth watching ;)

21. Finally, Joel's advice to gay actors in leading man roles? Don't come out.

One of the things that interested me about your book is that you talk a lot about being a gay man in the industry. What kinds of things are actors told to keep to themselves, and do you think that's a good thing or a bad thing?
Joel
: I think, for some reason, you can be a female movie star and be an out lesbian... Probably because straight men find lesbians "interesting". However, there is not one single out gay movie star. Television, yes, you have people like Matt Bomer and Neil Patrick Harris (although he grew up in front of our eyes, so he doesn't count). But name me one out gay movie star in feature films ever. There is none! I think the closest we ever got was Richard Chamberlain, but he came out after a certain point when his career was kind of over.
I think it's because of the tremendous amount of money involved in feature films, and the suspension of disbelief. That disbelief totally disappears on stage, but it doesn't translate to movies. I guess I would urge, if you are a handsome leading man on track to becoming a movie star, keep it to yourself. Do not come out.
I do think things are changing though – do you know who Jonathan Bailey is, for instance?
Joel
: No.
Well, he's gonna be in the new Wicked film.
Joel
: Is he Fiyero? Fiyero is not the star of the show. I think there are two other people in Wicked who have more important parts. Also, you can be gay as Fiyero. You're in a silly costume and you're not the *star* star! Anyway, that's my two cents, as saddening as it is.

I agree from a career standpoint tbh, the fact the interview turns to Jonathan Bailey as an example - who isn't a 'film star' - proves the casting director's point imo. I can't think of a single gay male actor who is given the opportunity to carry a feature film as the 'star'. That doesn't mean they don't have careers at all and there are many other reasons to come out that potentially outweigh the impact it will have on your career.

I guess he isn't wrong on the descriptive facts of the matter. There are basically no openly gay "leading men". I think his prescriptions are awful though, essentially telling guys to perpetuate the same awful taboos.

We need guys like Jonathan to hopefully break that cycle and help dismantle the Hollywood closet altogether. Things won't ever change if actors took this guys advice though.

But some people don't wanna be trailblazers or take risks and that's their right I suppose. It's a lot of pressure to bear and it doesn't help that the Hollywood media just reduces you to your sexuality a lot of the time.

I hope someone like Jonathan can break through. He pretty much played the 'leading man' role in Bridgerton, with plenty of women lusting after him regardless that he is gay. It will be examples such as this which will hopefully change casting directors minds and allow the trailblazers to remove this taboo.

What may get in the way of this is Hollywood's aspiration for an even larger global stage outside the Western world, where attitudes in Asia and Middle East/North Africa will get priority. We are already seeing more and more Hollywood movies being 'edited' for release in these markets.

An example of this is the Pixar animation Lightyear which was banned in several countries, including China - the 'largest movie market in the world'.

God that's just awful! I think while there's some truths in what's being said, giving the advice to people to not come out? Now? It's just unacceptable and will obviously keep things the way they are right now. The more people who are open, the more things will shift. That's what should be focused on. Not this outdated ideology of staying in the closet for the sake of your career. That's not how progress works. Plus how many men have surely been miserable because they were never open and focused on their career? I'm sure many would wish to go back and be able to live life as a proud gay man vs being closeted for the sake of their career

I think someone like Jonathan has the potential to be a mountain mover simply by being unapologetic and not going anywhere. No need to be the loudest person in the room. He's already proven his acting chops and his career will only move up as long as he keeps on going. He's already out and is proud of it! Real power doesn't have to continue to announce itself, it simply just is, and I think he has that

The last part about Wicked is also just fucking dumb and insulting. Jonathan is going to eat the role and it'll open doors for him

I think a lot of LGBTQIA baby boomers bear deep and painful old wounds that come out like this. Would you look at this world like it’s over, in his shoes? Like we won?

Unfortunately he is right. the main audience of cinemas are heterosexual men, and they want to see their own kind, so not a single major studio gave the main hetero role in a medium or high-budget genre film to a homosexual actor. Homo filmmakers are also prevented from making action films starring a heterosexual hero, only if the film has a comedic tinge. in general, homo viewers need to donate to independent homo filmmakers, the only way to get films about us
