Am I obtuse, or do I really not understand his messaging on his sexuality. As far as I can gather he made that ambiguous statement which amounted to trying to say he’s not not queer, but that’s about it. Is he just not into labels or still figuring things out? Has he expressly said “I am gay/queer”? I’m not saying he’s queerbaiting, but the ambiguity has me confused.

Yes, he's essentially remaining label free and perhaps suggesting that he's still questioning.
This isn't uncommon amongst LGBTQ+ youth. I think this will be the prevalent attitude going forward via the TikTok generation. There's a mystery and intrigue about it which people find interesting.
There's also the attitude of taking things as they come, leaving things open to change in the future, and not categorising others, which I think younger people are adopting in an effort to eschew what they perceive as inflexible views from narrow-minded older generations. (I know I'm generalising, but I think that's the gist of it for a noticeable amount of both queer and straight youth, myself included).
This. And given the ever expanding number of letters in the alphabet to label oneself with and the ever expanding number of ways to define one's gender, it's probably smarter to avoid offending anyone accidentally by avoiding a label. Especially when you're part of Gen Z.
